Chip and Joanna Gaines have shared the strict social media rule they have to keep their children off the platform.

The HGTV stars, who married in 2003, revealed on Today With Hoda And Jenna that they banned their five children from social media until they were 18 while promoting their new show, Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse, which has faced to a violent reaction.

Chip, 49, and his wife Joanna, 46, have built a loyal following after the first season of their home improvement series, Fixer Upper, in 2013 launched the Texas couple to stardom.

The couple recently took a break from breaking down walls to dish out parenting advice while sharing why they didn’t let their five children: Drake, 19; Ella, 17 years old; Duke, 16; Emmie, 14; and Crew, five, post online about their lives until they finished high school.

while talking to Today co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, the couple revealed that they didn’t let their kids have social media until the summer before college.

Jenna started the conversation about social media and said, ‘One of the things we can all agree on is that we are careful when it comes to cell phones and social media with our kids. What is your position? Just help us raise our children.’

Joanna responded: ‘Our internal rule is that you have access to social media the summer before you go to university. So we have that time, so 18. We have that time to figure that out.’

However, her husband noticed that it was not easy to keep their children offline.

And he added: ‘But it is a challenge! I mean, you can tell these kids want it before that. It’s not like it’s an agreed upon place that we all decide at about age 18 and say, “Oh, thank God. I didn’t want this to begin with.” They want it at 12, 13, 14.’

According to Chip, the 46-year-old mother said that while her children wanted to be on social media, they understood why the rule existed.

He added that his children also questioned him less.

‘They’ve been rather quiet about it. As I would say, I haven’t told them anything, but I would say that in the last year no one has asked for it.

“I think they know the heart behind it, which is hard, I think because all their other friends have it.” But I say you have some other things.

“I think for us it’s one of those things where we can say, ‘You have other things that are really cool. “Our life is a little different and we worry about this specific thing.”

“Especially for my daughters, since they are 14 and almost 17 years old. That’s the age when a lot of mental things influence you…” said the mother of five.

Over the weekend, Joanna celebrated her son’s 16th birthday and shared a slew of pictures with her family.

Duke also got his driver’s license, according to the Instagram post his mother uploaded over the weekend.

The Fixer Upper star could be seen decorating before a birthday party for her third oldest child.

At the beginning of the video, Joanna filmed some of her children and herself as they placed blue, green and white balloons near the kitchen and living room of their home.

Chip, who also participated in the interview, added: “Jo and I are in this beautiful moment.” We are evolving towards each other. It is the second part of our marriage.

During the interview with the publication, the couple also talked about raising their five children, four of them already in their teens.

“Chip is very good at saying, ‘You need your own identity. When you finish college, do some things on your own. Learn some things. And then if you want to come back years later and teach us, we “You’re here,” Joanna explained.

This week, the couple seemed to ignore the furious backlash sparked by the recent release of the trailer for their latest show, Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse.

Fans accused Joanna and Chip of flaunting their wealth in the latest installment of their hit show.

After seeing the sneak peek of their latest project Fixer Upper, uploaded to Magnolia Network’s Instagram, several fans began commenting that the couple seemed to be “showing off.”

One explained: ‘I don’t like seeing HGTV personalities renovating their own luxury second or third homes. It seems like they are bragging.

“That show isn’t funny anymore,” another wrote while many others admitted they stopped watching their show entirely after they decided to charge “for their network.”

In response to the comment accusing the couple, who share five children, of being ostentatious, several Instagram users defended Chip, 49, and Joanna, 46.

“Don’t be jealous, they earned it,” one responded.

Another asked: What’s wrong with the success of others?
