Two children were rushed to hospital along with a man and woman in their 50s after a horror crash on a major motorway.
Emergency crews rushed to the M1 Pacific Highway at Helensvale, on the northern edge of Queensland’s Gold Coast, after a ute collided with the rear of a police car at 1.20pm on Friday.
The accident occurred near exit 62 and members of the police, ambulances and firefighters quickly responded to the scene to help the four injured escape.
Four people, including two children under the age of 10, have been rushed to hospital in a serious condition following a serious crash on the M1 Pacific Highway in Helensvale, Queensland.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said four people were in a serious but stable condition and were being taken to Gold Coast University Hospital.
Among the injured were a girl under five years old with facial injuries, a girl under 10 years old with a laceration to her leg and two people in their 50s, including a man with injuries to the chest and abdomen and a woman with wounds on the legs.
A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said the police car was traveling on the M1 before being hit by the ute.
At that time they were not pursuing anyone, the spokesperson confirmed.
Photos of the car show that its entire rear end was crushed against the cabin of the vehicle.
Two lanes of southbound traffic remain closed near the crash site and congested traffic is now flowing into Dreamworld as debris is removed.
Police have urged all motorists to avoid the area for the time being.
“Motorists heading south are urged to avoid the area or expect long delays,” the spokesperson said.
