Harry Kane to receive special gold cap before England face Finland

England captain Harry Kane is on course to claim his 100th cap for the Three Lions when they face Finland on Tuesday night at Wembley Stadium.

Kane will become the first England player to reach the milestone since Wayne Rooney, who reached his century in November 2014.

He will become only the 10th player to reach this milestone in England’s history, with Peter Shilton leading the way on 125 caps.

The Football Association has confirmed that Kane’s achievement will be celebrated with a one-off presentation before England’s game against Finland.

In a statement, the governing body wrote: “The FA will pay tribute ahead of the UEFA Nations League match with a special pre-match ceremony including the presentation of a golden cap.”

There will also be a pre-match tribute to former Three Lions coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, who passed away aged 76 last month.

Kane made his international debut in March 2015, under manager Roy Hodgson, and found the net after just 79 seconds.

He scored a further 65 goals in the next 98 games and is England’s all-time leading scorer.

He surpassed Rooney’s tally of 53 when he found the net from the penalty spot against Italy in March 2023.

Kane was named captain of the Three Lions under Gareth Southgate ahead of the 2018 World Cup, where he was the top scorer with six goals.

During his nine years with England, the striker has played in five major tournaments and captained the country to their first two major international finals since 1966.

He has played in more competitive international matches than any other England player in history, and when he leads the team out against Finland it will become the 45th different country they have faced.

Kane is currently 31, but before England’s win over Ireland he insisted he wants to lead his country to the 2024 World Cup.

Kane’s performances during Euro 2024 were much talked about and he was hooked before the end in the final against Spain, which England lost 2-1.

However, after Cristiano Ronaldo’s 900th goal in the sport, Kane is out to prove he can still play at the highest international level.

“Cristiano is showing that every week, every time he plays, every time he scores, so from my point of view that’s the goal,” Kane said. “I want to play for England as much as possible.”

“There will certainly be noise around me, as there still is around Cristiano, but as long as you keep performing and doing what you know you can, that’s all you can do.”

Regarding his form, Kane believes he is not the only player who has had problems during the summer.

“There was a lot of talk about me and my fitness during the Euros, but I felt in good shape,” Kane insisted.

“Did the games go as well as I wanted? No, not really, but I think there were a lot of us who weren’t up to par in terms of individual performances.

“We’ve done a great job to get to where we are. I think that was mainly due to our team spirit and the cohesion we’ve developed over the years.

‘Sometimes when things don’t go your way, there’s always someone to blame and something to look for.’

Kane needs to make 27 more appearances for his country if he is to break Shilton’s record, while he needs 22 more to beat former captain Rooney, who made 120.
