GWS Giants captain Toby Greene has expressed his regret over the club’s recent Wacky Wednesday scandal and admitted “there are things we could have done better”.
Greene, 31, was initially fined $20,000 by the AFL, later reduced to $5,000, after an anonymous complaint was made about several of his teammates, specifically for their inappropriate choice of clothing. .
They reportedly included the use of an inflatable doll and a shocking prank involving disgraced rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, while other players were said to dress up as former NRL player Jarryd Hayne and Australian star NBA Josh Giddey.
Hayne’s rape conviction was overturned earlier this year, while Giddey was informed in January that he would not face charges amid allegations he had an inappropriate relationship with an underage girl in 2021.
Following the Sydney show, 20-year-old Giants youngster Josh Fahey was suspended for four games by the AFL, with Greene receiving his massive ban after “displaying poor leadership” as club captain.
It is understood Fahey disguised himself as Hayne.
Two other Giants players, who have not been named, bizarrely chose to dress up as the twin towers from the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, where nearly 3,000 people died in 2001.
If that wasn’t bad enough, other stars chose to mirror characters in a Django Unchained scene that characterized slavery.
GWS Giants captain Toby Greene has expressed his regret over the recent Wacky Wednesday scandal at the club and admitted “there are things we could have done better”.
Greene dressed as Olympic breakdancer Rachel ‘Raygun’ Gunn, but was fined $5,000 by the AFL after failing to demonstrate proper leadership at the ‘Wacky Wednesday’ party.
Young Giants player Josh Fahey, 20, was suspended for four games by the AFL for his unacceptable clothing.
Greene, who dressed up as infamous Olympic breakdancer Rachael Gunn, now realizes that what the playgroup considered fun could be considered very offensive to other people.
“There are things we could have done better, myself and as a club,” Greene told Channel 7 on Friday.
“We learned them along the way and I guess all we can do is make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
While Greene wouldn’t rule out participating in future end-of-season celebrations, he promised to “go with the flow,” before adding that it was unlikely the Giants would “do much next year.”
The Wacky Wednesday celebrations followed an unforgettable finals campaign for GWS.
Adam Kingsley’s men blew a 27-point lead in the qualifying final against Sydney, and were then beaten by eventual premiers Brisbane Lions, despite leading at one point by 44 points.
Early 2025 major markets have GWS at $9 to win its inaugural flag, behind Brisbane ($8) and Hawthorn ($8).
