Where the audio controls come from
Microsoft first added screen recording to Snipping Tool for Windows Insiders in December 2022, and announced optional recording of “PC audio” and microphone voice-over in Snipping Tool version 11.2307.44.0 on 31 August 2023, with app settings for default audio and recording-device choice. That post was later updated to say the change was rolling out to the Release Preview channel. Microsoft’s main Snipping Tool help page describes the Record button, the Windows + Shift + R shortcut and Edit in Clipchamp, but does not list the audio buttons. So if you do not see them, the most likely first step is updating the app through Microsoft Store; we cannot promise which version your PC has.
No sound in the recording? Check these in order
1) The capture-bar buttons were muted when you pressed Start. 2) Windows microphone privacy blocks Snipping Tool. 3) The wrong microphone was selected (for example a webcam mic instead of a headset). 4) The app you wanted to hear was playing to a device that was not being captured, or was muted itself. 5) The player you used to check the file is muted or plays only part of the audio. Test each change with a short clip instead of repeating a long recording.
Adding or fixing audio after recording
After a recording, Microsoft documents an Edit in Clipchamp button for adding captions or audio, adjusting volume between 0 and 200%, and detaching audio. That is useful for voice-over added later, but it cannot recover a microphone or PC sound that was never recorded. If live narration matters, run the 10-second test first.
When Snipping Tool is not enough
Snipping Tool is built for quick clips of a selected area. If you need separate microphone and desktop tracks for editing, scenes, a webcam overlay or long scheduled recordings, a dedicated recorder fits better. OBS Studio and ShareX are free Windows options; Xbox Game Bar is built in and aimed at app and game capture; Clipchamp is the editor Snipping Tool hands off to. Compare their documented limits on our screen-recording pages before you switch.
Scope of this guide
We read the linked official help on 19 October 2026 and wrote this guide from it. We did not install, run or time the software for this guide, and nothing here is a hands-on test result. Menus can differ by app version, region and device; check what your own screen shows.
Inspect the exact editions
