Extraordinary footage shows the terrifying moment two young children walked into a busy main road in the middle of traffic after escaping from a nearby nursery.

The unsupervised pair were caught climbing through a hole in a broken fence at Goodstart Early Learning Blair Athol and running onto Main North Road in Adelaide’s north on Monday.

They ventured onto a road considered a black spot for accidents, forcing traffic to slow down to avoid hitting the children.

Moments later, several frantic employees were seen running down the street after realising their young charges had escaped.

A teacher ran into the street and pulled one of the children to safety as a car stopped in front of them.

The terrifying scenes unfolded before the eyes of shocked passersby and locals.

George Mavromatis heard the staff’s screams from across the street.

“This is a very bad intersection. We’ve seen multiple car accidents. We were very lucky to get away with that, to tell you the truth,” he said. Nine news.

“I have a two-year-old and a four-year-old and yeah, it’s amazing. I’m going to go home and hug them when I get home from work.”

At that time, three teachers were looking after nine children.

Staff are understood to have conducted a security check of the outdoor play area but did not spot the gap in the broken fence as it was covered with bamboo.

The center has since apologized to the children’s parents.

The incident is now under multiple investigations by the school and the South Australian Education Standards Board.

Other parents at the daycare were shocked by what happened.

“That’s not cool,” one told Nine News.

“But I’ll wait to see what they have to say about it, I guess I don’t know the whole story yet.”
