Garrett Crochet oddly ejected during strange ninth-inning rain delay

Garrett Crochet strangely ejected during strange ninth-inning rain delay originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

white sock Reliever John Brebbia pitched the top of the ninth inning at Guaranteed Rate Field in pouring rain, recording all three outs while walking one batter out of a total of 12 pitches in the frame.

That’s when a little chaos ensued Tuesday night.

Officials rained out the game while they waited for heavy rain to pass over the south side. His decision came just before the bottom of the ninth inning with three outs left in the game. It would be the second rain delay of the night, as the game was delayed 40 minutes to start due to rain.

The rain delay in the ninth inning lasted over an hour, as the delay began around 10:07 p.m. and resumed again at 11:15 p.m. However, play did not resume before the umpires ejected to starter Garrett Crochet, who was apparently chirping at the umpires. about the delay.

“I don’t know what happened. Something to do with the weather or something. I’m not sure,” coach Pedro Grifol said after the game.

The ejection provided no disadvantage to the White Sox, as Crochet did not start or relieve any pitchers on Tuesday. In fact, the bottom of the ninth inning (when it resumed) lasted less than three minutes.

The ejection marked the first of Crochet’s career; a memorable one, too.

This isn’t the first strange rain delay the White Sox have encountered this season. On May 4, ironically, with Brebbia pitching, St. Louis officials delayed the game with one out left in the bottom of the 10th inning.

That game, unlike Tuesday night, had a rain delay that lasted more than three hours at Busch Stadium. The White Sox won that game, 6-5, when Tanner Banks struck out the last Cardinals batter on five pitches after the rain delay.

Why were none of those games suspended and resumed the next day? I don’t know.

The White Sox return to Guaranteed Rate Field on Wednesday at 6:40 pm to finish their series against the Blue Jays. Tune in to NBC Sports Chicago coverage starting at 6 p.m.
