Sometimes music says what words can’t, and in this case, a father’s parody version of Brandy from The Looking Glass (a nod to his son’s new wife) accomplished just that.
The groom’s father, Bruce Miller, decided to put his musical skills to use for his son Jake’s wedding and opted to sing for the newlyweds after giving his speech.
Bruce, 61, of Weston, Florida, became an internet sensation after a video of his personalized musical number, in which he poked fun at his son and told the story of his relationship with his new wife, Brandi, went viral.
“I’m a ’70s rock music junkie and the band Looking Glass had a hit song called Brandy,” the father told TODAY, adding that he realized he could change the lyrics as a tribute to his new daughter-in-law.
Bruce worked with a local producer to create the song, memorizing it and practicing it every time he was in his car.
The groom’s father, Bruce Miller, decided to put his musical skills to use for his son Jake’s wedding and opted to sing to the newlyweds after giving his speech.
“I wanted to do it right,” the passionate father said.
A 38-second clip filmed by videographers. Wild and vagabond and shared by Jake on social media after his June 1 wedding, shows his father singing the opening bars of the song.
“They met the old-fashioned way, Jake was on tour near Tampa Bay,” Bruce sang.
“He saw her picture on Instagram like this, so he DM’d her and said, ‘Hey, come to my show,'” the clever lyrics continue.
She said, “I’ve never heard of you, so why should I go?” but they kept in touch and love began to grow.
“And here we are today.”
Jake posted the clip and wrote: ‘My dad gave the most epic wedding speech ever.’
The song was particularly special as Jake himself is a musician, working as a singer-songwriter.
“That’s just the way he is,” Jake tells TODAY.com. “The reason I got into music was because of my dad – he always had Bruce Springsteen and Eagles on at home and he taught me how to play drums when I was eight.”
Brandi and Jake Miller, who began dating in 2019, tied the knot on June 1 in the Santa Barbara area.
Bruce, who says music is an important part of his life, got the idea for the wedding from a family friend, after the bride’s father-in-law sang a cover of Billy Joel’s Piano Man.
He then asked the couple if he could do it at their wedding, to which they enthusiastically replied yes.
The video has over 3.1 million views on TikTok, with thousands of people commenting on the sweet post.
“The best thing I’ve ever seen!!!” one user wrote enthusiastically.
“This is something I will remember forever!!! Fantastic,” another agreed.
“We need everything!” one pleaded.
“This is the best thing I’ve seen in a long time!!! I don’t even know these people and I love this!!! Wishing Jake and Brandy all the best!!!” someone else said.
Jake and Brandi, a speech pathologist, began dating in August 2019. He was living in Los Angeles at the time and she was in Florida, but they began living with her family in Florida during the pandemic.
“When I saw how well she got along with my parents and my sister… I knew she was the one,” Jake gushed.
Bruce is already thinking about his next performance after Jake’s sister Jenny recently got engaged, but luckily, he doesn’t have stage fright.
“My endorphins kicked in,” the proud dad said of his performance at Jake and Brandi’s wedding.
“I had the time of my life.”
