Emma Raducanu went down fighting when she was defeated in straight sets by world number two Aryna Sabalenka in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
Raducanu pushed the Belarusian to the limit, fighting off a break to tie at 5-5 in the second set before eventually falling to a 6-3, 7-5 defeat.
Despite her loss, the 21-year-old Brit will gain confidence from the way she constantly put pressure on her opponent before Sabalenka finally claimed victory on her fourth match point.
Raducanu had booked his place in the third round after winning consecutive matches for the first time since reaching the last 16 of the same tournament last year.
“I know that (Raducanu’s) level is there and that he can play great tennis,” Sabalenka said.

“But in those key moments, I focused on myself and the things I have to do on the court to be in this game, and I think it worked well.”
Cameron Norrie was also eliminated after a dramatic 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5) and 6-3 defeat against French veteran Gael Monfils.
The British number one was up a set and 3-0 before falling victim to a stirring comeback from the 37-year-old, who enjoyed the support of the majority of the crowd.
Monfils regained level in an extraordinary tie-break in the second set in which he won a point with an underarm serve before taking the set at the end of an impressive 31-stroke comeback.
Monfils said in an on-court interview: “I’ve been working hard. Cam was playing very well tactically. He was better than me at the beginning.
‘I had to change and think about it. I had to improve a couple of things in my game to give him problems and in the end I was happy to be able to physically stay with him.
