“That much is clear from his later stories, but some might wonder whether his financial success has been matched by his success as a Time Lord.”

The source continued: “The number of people tuning into a show that revels in being a shared experience for the whole family is a little disappointing, to say the least.”

MailOnline has contacted representatives of Ncuti for comment.

Ncuti made his first appearance as the famous time traveller in May, with the first two episodes, which premiered on iPlayer ahead of the BBC One broadcast, attracting 2.7 million and 3.2 million viewers.

However, a week later, audience figures quickly dropped to 2.3 million.

Despite a slight increase to 3 million viewers in later episodes, the remainder of the fourteenth season had around 2.3 million people tuning in.

A BBC spokesperson told The Sun: ‘Overnight ratings no longer give an accurate picture of all those watching drama in an on-demand world.

‘This season of Doctor Who premiered on iPlayer almost 24 hours before it aired, and the first episode has already been watched by over 6 million viewers and continues to grow.’

According to The Sun, Ncuti has apparently seen his earnings double to £1.9m, adding to the cash he had already raked in for previous roles, including his part in Netflix teen comedy Sex Education.

I watched the finale of Doctor Who and boy, was it so anticlimactic. I was expecting the mother to be someone important like River Song, but it turned out to be a random person.
