An immigrant who entered the country illegally and had previously been deported was arrested for stabbing a 14-year-old Illinois girl at her brother’s baseball game.
On Saturday at around 3:45 p.m. local time, the teenager was with her mother watching her brother play in a field in the unincorporated area of Lowell, about 100 miles west of Chicago.
Dimas Gabriel Yanez, 26, allegedly stabbed the girl in the hand and tried to stab her mother, both of whom have not yet been identified, with a “butcher-type knife.”
Yanez, who authorities say was deported to Honduras in 2018 before illegally returning to the United States, was chased into the woods near the field, after which police found the knife.
Police described what was conducted as an “extensive” search, with multiple law enforcement agencies, K9 and aviation units searching for Yanez.

Local sheriffs say Yanez had cut his hair to try to confuse people trying to find him before he was arrested.
Finally, on Sunday afternoon, he was located in a cornfield and arrested by police after chasing him on foot.
Investigators believe Yanez may have committed other crimes since returning to the United States.
Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said in a statement that the Department of Homeland Security has been informed of Yanez’s arrest.
“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to each and every Lake County police officer and all law enforcement agencies working tirelessly in the investigation and pursuit of this case,” Martinez said.
“I am proud of the level of cooperation that has been demonstrated by police officers across the county. I would also like to thank the public for sharing information responsibly and for helping us with good tips that officers could use,” he added.
The 14-year-old victim was treated for her injuries at a local hospital before being released.
Martinez adds that the investigation is still ongoing.

The Immigration Law Reform Institute (IRLI) says Johnson squandered hundreds of millions of dollars on immigrants while his own constituents languished in poverty.
Republicans blame the Biden administration for allowing asylum seekers to arrive from Mexico, but IRLI director Dale Wilcox says progressive mayors should shoulder some of the blame.
The open-arms attitude of Johnson, Adams and other mayors is one of the “biggest magnets that draw illegal immigrants to this country,” Wilcox says.
“While they claim to be more compassionate than their critics, these mayors’ policies are actually causing unacceptable levels of overcrowding, criminal activity and death in their communities,” he added.
Studies have shown that immigrants, including those in the United States illegally, do not commit crimes at a higher rate than native-born Americans.
Johnson won a surprising election victory last year as the insurgent progressive who unseated incumbent Lori Lightfoot.
Yanez, who authorities say was deported to Honduras in 2018 before returning to the United States illegally, was chased into the woods near the field, after which police found the knife.
But since taking over City Hall he has struggled as his plans to raise taxes and tackle homelessness have been thwarted.
He has battled floods of asylum seekers who have swamped shelters and taken up residence in police stations and at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
In April, he asked the city to provide an additional $70 million to accommodate the tens of thousands of new arrivals.
But their new migrant shelters quickly came under fire from residents.
They said the new arrivals were receiving better treatment than economically struggling locals, who faced eviction and slept on the streets.
Despite high hopes for his inauguration, Johnson’s popularity has plummeted.
In an April poll, only 9 percent of Chicagoans rated him as doing an “above average” job.
