Sometimes it’s best to be basic, and one dermatologist has looked at how a simple ingredient could dramatically improve the skin of eczema sufferers.
content creator Sharon K. Xie led to tiktok to explain that she had been suffering from eczema, a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes dry, itchy and inflamed skin, and applied Aquaphor, a moisturizing ointment to help relieve her symptoms.
However, she claims that after telling her dermatologist she was applying it, she was quickly told to stop.
“I’m currently dealing with an eczema outbreak around my mouth, so I asked my doctor what I should do and he told me to drop everything and just use Vaseline,” she said in the video, which has so far been viewed. more than 1.3 million times.
Content creator Sharon K. Xie took to TikTok to explain that she had been suffering from eczema, a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes dry, itchy, and inflamed skin, and applied Aquaphor, a moisturizing ointment to help relieve her symptoms.
According to Sharon, her dermatologist told her that Aquaphor contains lanolin, which can cause eczema flare-ups in some people.
“(He said) just use Vaseline because Aquaphor has other ingredients like lanolin, which I honestly didn’t know (Aquaphor) contained lanolin,” she explained.
“If you have very sensitive skin, you only need the basic ingredients to keep it hydrated,” she explained.
“Vaseline is 100 percent Vaseline and Aquaphor has many ingredients,” he added.
TikTok users chimed in with their own experiences, and others admitted they’d also had issues with lanolin products in the past.
‘I basically became intolerant to lanolin due to overuse of Aquaphor, so now I’m basically allergic. Laneige Lip Masks and Summer Fridays don’t have it! Natural balms usually work, not Burts Bees!!’ one person wrote.
“I also switched to Vaseline and my eczema has calmed down,” said another.
Others said they had experienced the opposite effect.
‘That’s really crazy because for me, Vaseline never helped. When I bought Aquaphor, it calmed my eczema overnight, especially on my eyebrows and eyelid,” one user shared.
Sharon’s dermatologist said Aquaphor contains lanolin, which can cause eczema flare-ups in some people, and recommended Vaseline instead, which is 100 percent Vaseline.

Dermatologists often recommend eliminating skin care routines.
In a popular clip posted on TikTok, California-based Dr. Azadeh Shirazi shared the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to skincare.
In the video, Shirazi warned viewers not to use too many different types of products.
“I have to remind you that your skin is an organ, it is not designed to have so many active ingredients and products bombarding it,” Shirazi shared.
She explained that there are only three skin care products you really need to use every day: a cleanser, a moisturizer, and an SPF.
“If you have acne or want to do something anti-aging, add a treatment step between your cleanser and moisturizer,” she advised.
