Courteney Cox reflects on her journey as a mother now that her daughter, Coco Arquette, is 19 years old.
The Friends star, 59, sat down for an interview with Minnie Driver about her Minnie’s Quiz Podcast and she was candid about her parenting style, albeit with hindsight, with 20/20 vision now that Coco is older.
Speaking about things Coco has been through in the past, Courteney, who recently dined with friends at Giorgio Baldi, said: “I didn’t want to intervene even though I knew something wasn’t right because she would get really mad at me.” .’
Like many children, Coco, whom Courteney shares with ex-husband David Arquette, 52, was convinced her mother didn’t understand what she was going through and insisted on going her own way.
“I understood it and I should have trusted myself and I should have stepped in,” the Cougar Town alum added.

“I’m not saying I made her who she is, but you see things in other people, whether it’s just taking care of people and being the best person,” she continued.
But Courteney acknowledges that she’s saying all of this from a different place in life, not from who she was years ago when the situations arose.
‘And I mean, that’s one of the things with age, I’ve learned to say no, I’ve learned to have boundaries.
“But I mean, back when she was a little girl or not all those years ago, I wish I had been a firmer mother,” she explained.
‘People will say, “Why do you let Coco wear so much makeup?” She’s been wearing makeup forever, that’s self-expression for her,” Cox explained.
‘She loves dressing up. She’s dyeing her hair, a week ago it was purple, I think now it’s blonde underneath before it was blue.’
The Scream actress joked that Coco has changed her hair color so many times that ‘we’ve ruined the bathroom 1,000 times.’
But in the end boys will be boys. “I think we have to let them be themselves, with limits, of course,” she said. ‘I’m not good at boundaries. I have to get better at that.’
Host Driver also asked Courtney if there was anything she didn’t like about herself.

“What I like least about myself are feelings of jealousy,” she shared, adding that she’s not sure if it’s age, insecurity, or what drives her to jealousy.
‘If you can feel replaced or if it’s… I think jealousy is such a horrible emotion, and sometimes I get that.
“I get jealous or I get scared, whether it’s because I’m getting older and I can’t stay in the game, or it could be anything, but every time I feel jealous, I can’t stand it,” she continued.
“I’ll talk to my therapist and say, ‘I just hate this feeling,'” she added.
