Harrison Butker is set to become the highest-paid kicker in NFL history as the Chiefs have signed the 29-year-old to a new $25 million contract.
Butker has signed a four-year, $25.6 million contract that includes $17.8 million in guaranteed money.
Butker’s new deal comes three months after he made headlines for a controversial commencement speech at Benedictine College in Kansas.
The long-time Chiefs kicker urged men to “fight cultural emasculation” and claimed that women are meant to be “housewives.”
Butker’s speech was filled with his conservative views, not only on gender roles, but also on abortion and vaccines.
Butker agreed to a new contract with the Chiefs, becoming the highest-paid kicker in history.
“To the gentlemen here today, part of what plagues society is this lie that has been told to you that men are not needed in the home and in our communities,” Butker said as part of his May address.
“As men, we set the tone for the culture, and when that’s missing, disorder, dysfunction and chaos ensue,” Butker continued. “This absence of men in the home is what plays a major role in the violence we see across the country.”
The three-time Super Bowl champion has become more vocal in recent years regarding his personal beliefs.
Among his beliefs was wearing a tie with a pro-life Latin phrase at the Chiefs’ Super Bowl celebration at the White House last year. Butker’s views oppose President Joe Biden’s pro-choice policies.
Butker has been the Chiefs’ starting kicker since 2017 and kicked the game-winning field goal in last year’s Super Bowl against the Eagles.
The previous record for highest-paid kickers belonged to Baltimore’s Justin Tucker and Philadelphia’s Jake Elliott, who both earn $6 million per season.
