Angel Gomes is reportedly Newcastle’s top target for January after his unflappable performances for England, but they could face fierce competition for his signature.
The former Manchester United star, 24, made his full debut in the 2-0 win over Finland on Tuesday and impressed with his composure and industriousness.
Ian Wright and Roy Keane praised Gomes, who made his debut as a substitute against Ireland days earlier, while Lee Carsley said he “fully deserves” the plaudits.
Gomes left United at 19 in 2020 after struggling for playing time and his star has risen at Lille.
Newcastle could be in a battle with Liverpool, Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund to sign him, according to The sun.

His contract with Lille expires this summer and there are reports suggesting he will not extend his stay at the Stade Pierre Mauroy.
That could leave a number of clubs vying for the star, who is now in his fourth season as a regular at Lille after a loan spell at Portuguese club Boavista.
According The sunSpurs were already interested in him and several clubs were following him at Wembley.
Carsley, who knows Gomes from managing the Under-21 team, explained what it is like to work with him.
“He loves football, he watches it, he’s interested in tactics, he knows all the players in any league,” Carsley said on Tuesday.
‘If you ask for feedback, you have to be prepared for feedback on the session, or on how we’re going to develop, or on the positions.
“He often talks about the games he’s played for other clubs or the teams he’s played against, because obviously he plays in France so he sees different things. He fully deserves it (the praise).”
Gomes was elegant and controlled as Declan Rice’s midfield partner against Finland and drew admiration from ITV Sport’s panel of pundits.

Wright said: ‘There’s been talk of Angel Gomes, Jack (Grealish) and Trent (Alexander-Arnold).
“Seeing Gomes in that midfield, constantly moving. His touch on the ball. He’s constantly available.
Keane added that he was “busy” in the middle of the park. “There are big options. There will probably be a bit of a headache for him (Carsley).”
Gomes only made 10 first-team appearances at Old Trafford before deciding to leave his boyhood club after becoming frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities.
He has since made a name for himself in France and was given a chance with England by Carsley after Gareth Southgate quit following the Euro 2024 final defeat to France.
