BMW is recalling nearly 400,000 cars in the United States over faulty air bag inflators that could explode, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Fiat parent company Stellantis has announced that another 300,000 vehicles will be recalled due to airbag failures.

An inflator explosion can cause sharp metal fragments to strike the driver or other vehicle occupants, which could result in injury or death, NHTSA said.

In addition, a faulty inflator may only partially inflate the airbag.

The recall affects certain sedans and sport utility vehicles. The sedans in question are cars that have had the original steering wheel replaced with an M-sport steering wheel.

According to a statement, car dealers will replace the airbags free of charge.
