Popular ABC News anchor Beverley O'Connor has announced she is leaving the national broadcaster after more than 10 years.

Popular ABC News presenter Beverley O’Connor has announced she is leaving the show after more than 10 years at the national broadcaster.

O’Connor, who hosts the news program The World, announced she was leaving ABC on Tuesday night.

“It’s been a privilege,” he said. “It’s time to take a breath and look at a new chapter.”

O’Connor has worked for ABC radio and television since 1987. She specialised in economics and politics and was a presenter on ABC Radio Melbourne for five years before moving to Seven in 2004.

In 2008, she worked as a weekend presenter for ABC News Victoria, before being appointed presenter of The World.

O’Connor was born in South Africa and studied journalism in Johannesburg. She also studied theatre and ballet. She moved to Australia in the 1980s.

Many viewers were saddened by her departure from ABC.

“We will miss you on The World’s late night sessions. You have a nice soothing voice to turn down the volume at night. I wish you all the best for what’s ahead,” one viewer wrote online.

Another added: “Thank you, Bev, for the years of grace, integrity, intellect and class with which you hosted The World. We will miss the gentle calm of your voice in the late hours of the night.”

A third said: “Always looking forward to seeing you on The World. A great combination of professionalism, knowledge and humour/cheerfulness/kindness. Fabulous interview skills. Thanks for everything.”
