A Queensland man used almost 7,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points he had accumulated to reduce his gas bill from $60 to just $23.67 at BP.

One savvy shopper shared how he saved $36 on gas when he filled up the tank.

Qantas Points can be earned and redeemed when members use a participating BP service station.

The Queensland driver raved about the discount, calling it “the best save ever”, impressing other Australian budgets.

‘This morning I only had to pay $23.67 for fuel. “I scanned my Qantas card and found I could convert a bunch of points into a discount on fuel,” he said in a post on Sales addicts Australia.

‘Talk about the biggest fuel savings ever!’

Qantas members can use their frequent flyer points at participating service stations to get discounts on fuel and eligible items such as snacks and drinks.

Members can redeem the discount when they scan their Qantas card at BP, select the pay with points option when prompted and enter the four-digit reward code which can be found in the Qantas app.

By downloading the BPme app, Qantas members can link their frequent flyer account to earn two points per liter of BP Ultimate Unleaded 98 fuel purchased and one point per $1 spent on eligible in-store purchases.

The group members were impressed with the man’s life-saving trick.

‘I do it a lot. I have Commonwealth points and convert them into gift vouchers. Same with Telstra points. I mean, if you can’t afford a vacation, you might as well use it when you need it!’ said a woman.

‘Well done, great save. Use your points however you want. It’s your points,’ a second replied and a third said: ‘Good job I say.’

However, not everyone thought the hack was a good value.

‘I’m glad you enjoyed the savings, but for perspective, 6,000 Qantas points are enough for a one-way trip from Melbourne to Sydney, worth around $130. It is much better to spend points on flights than on gas, toasters, etc.,” one person explained.

“Not really a savings when you’ve spent enough points for interstate travel,” another commented.

The Qantas member responded by saying he wasn’t planning on flying anywhere anytime soon, so he took the opportunity to save a penny on fuel.

‘I took the opportunity to save and I don’t regret it one bit. This economy is absolutely wild and expensive. “I’m doing everything I can to stay afloat and stay alive,” he said.

“I can’t afford a vacation, this was the best price reduction I’ve ever had.”
