A wine connoisseur has shared his definitive guide to the best winter wines for 2024.

A wine connoisseur has shared his ultimate guide to affordable new reds for 2024, just in time for the cold winter season.

Wine expert and Aldi Australia buying director Jason Bowyer compiled their recommendations, and each bottle costs less than $16.

Popular picks include the Standing People Lighter in Alcohol Pinot Noir ($11.99), the Nerissimo Puglia Primitivo ($11.99), and the Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz ($15.99).

The cheapest wine is only $1.71 a glass.

Bowyer says lower alcohol wines are gaining popularity, making Standing People Pinot Noir even more desirable.

He recommends pairing the drink with Aldi’s Emporium Selection crumbled camembert ($4.49) for a “toasted” starter or accompaniment.

Bowyer also enjoys the Truly Wildly McLaren Vale Nero D’Avola ($13.99).

‘A South Australian release not to be missed, this berry-flavored red is sure to be a hit with family and friends and, at under $14, you’d better get it quick!’

The latest Australian wine in the new winter drop is the Mount Langi Ghiran ‘Pepper Series’ Shiraz ($15.99) from Victoria.

“This Shiraz has everything Australians expect from the Grampian wine region and is widely considered the best of the best in terms of quality,” Mr Bowyer said.

I’d pair the wine with Aldi’s Emporium Selection Soft Blue Cheese ($5.49), as they “go together like two best friends.”

The wine expert said those who prefer a fruitier flavor should try the Les Argelieres Pay DOC Pinot Noir ($11.99).

“It comes from the colder mountainous areas of France and offers a rich flavor with hints of raspberry and dark cherries,” he said.

Speaking of European wines, Aldi also just released bottles of Nerissimo Puglia Primitivo ($11.99).

“Aldi shoppers who love discovering a new hidden gem will be delighted with this Italian red,” he said. ‘Featured prominently in the 2024 Best Italian Wines Yearbook, this celebrated release is bursting with notes of blackberry and dark chocolate.

‘Pairs wonderfully with Emporium Selection Goat Cheese ($3.99). Creamy French cheese with a mild, tangy flavor is great with fresh fruit or a crunchy salad.

Another Italian wine expected to fly off the shelves is the Corte Carista Montepulciano D’Abruzzo DOC ($11.99), made by one of the world’s leading winemakers: Alberto Antonini.

“Ruby red wine is packed with all the flavor without the price, so why limit yourself to just one bottle?” Mr. Bowyer said.
