Police arrested a driver accused of fleeing the scene of an accident and leaving his female passenger to die in the front seat of a rented truck.

The 32-meter-tall driver allegedly lost control of the truck and crashed into a pole in Melbourneto the south east, shortly before 3 a.m. on Monday.

Moments after the accident, the driver was seen fleeing, but a 47-year-old woman was left at the scene with catastrophic injuries, although she was still alive.

The driver was located a short time later hiding in a bush by police dogs.

Victoria Police Detective Sergeant Stephen Hill told reporters he could not understand how anyone could leave another person for dead.

Police arrested a driver accused of fleeing the scene of the accident and leaving his passenger to die in the front seat.

“These two people obviously know each other and he made the cruel decision to let his passenger die,” Hill said.

The truck was full of household items, but it is unknown if they belonged to the couple.
