Phil Foden surprised several Manchester City fans when he was asked to name his final Premier League XI.

The 23-year-old, who is in the best form of his life this season, has scored 22 goals in all competitions as Pep Guardiola’s side bid to become the first club to win four consecutive top-flight titles in England.

With the commercial end of the campaign approaching and the European Championship on the horizon, Foden sat down with Mail Sport Football editor Ian Ladyman to discuss his rise to the top of the sport.

As well as talking about the title and detailing why he wears the number 47, Foden also named an all-time Premier League XI that caught more than a few eyes online.

Starting with his all-important defensive line, Foden began by naming current City goalkeeper Ederson before slotting in Kyle Walker at right-back.

“I’m serious, I don’t see another right back,” he insisted.

At the heart of the defence, Foden fielded City legend Vincent Kompany alongside current title rival Virgil van Dijk, with former Arsenal and Chelsea star Ashley Cole completing the back four.

In midfield, Foden’s team featured four-time Premier League winner David Silva, along with former Arsenal talisman Patrick Vieira: “I feel like [Silva] “You need that protection, so it’s a good balance,” he reasoned.

The midfield pairing left no room for current City captain Kevin De Bruyne, although Foden previously commented that he had “never seen anything like” the Belgian on the pitch.

Leaving De Bruyne out of their fantasy XI proved to be a controversial decision among City fans on social media.

One wrote: ‘No KDB Foden needs to be benched next game just for this’

Another agreed: “Replace any midfielder with kdb and ederson with any good guard and you’ll hit the spot.”

Another fan added: “Relax guys, he didn’t put KDB because he was representing David, everything is fine.”

Cristiano Ronaldo was also named in the star-studded squad, with Thierry Henry shifted down the right wing to make room for two central forwards.

Spearheading the attack, Sergio Aguero was the seventh City alumnus to be named in the squad, with Wayne Rooney joining the Argentine up front.
