An Australian has finally answered an age-old question about supermarket shopping: is it better to buy meat from the butcher or the supermarket?
matt westfrom Queensland, decided to test meat from both retailers based on taste, quality and weight after cooking.
He bought 500 grams of grass-fed beef at Woolworths ($11) and the same amount at his local butcher ($8.50).
“In my opinion, the price alone makes it worth it,” he said in a video.
“They’re both premium ground beef, they’re both grass-fed, so they’re technically on the same playing field.”
Matt West bought 500g of grass-fed beef from his local butcher ($8.50)
West was surprised by one detail when he decided to cook the supermarket meat.
“I was very surprised by the amount of water that came out of the minced meat,” he said.
“I also wanted to see their weight once cooked and the one from the supermarket weighed 371 g.”
He repeated the process with the butcher’s meat.
“The butcher’s minced meat had a lot less water – I couldn’t believe the difference between the two,” he said. “The butcher’s minced meat cost 417g, 46g more than the supermarket’s.”
Woolworths grass-fed beef cost Mr West $11
Based on price and weight, Mr. West made his decision.
‘In my opinion, go to the butcher! You’ll save more money, get more meat for your money and be able to support a local business.’
Shoppers should keep in mind that supermarket meat is packaged and retains more moisture in the package.
All major supermarkets have customer satisfaction teams who you can report your concerns to if you have any problems with any of your purchases, including minced meat.
Australian buyers were surprised by Mr West’s findings.
“Every butcher near me is very expensive,” said one.
“I bought scotch fillet from two butchers and it was rubbish compared to the supermarket,” wrote another.
‘I really thought butcher was for rich people, so I’ll definitely try it myself!’ stated one buyer.
‘We switched to the local butcher a few months ago. Better meat and we no longer throw away meat that spoils,” shared another.
