New Delhi:

A man allegedly posing as a police officer has duped people by saying he can get cars and mobile phones for them at very low prices at an auction at a Delhi court, officials said on Tuesday.

The man allegedly claimed to be a crime operative and took money at the courthouse before fleeing, they said.

The suspect, identified as Ayub Khan, has been arrested, they added.

According to police, on January 29, they received a PCR call about one Deepak Chaudhary, who introduced himself as a crime branch officer.

The complainant said that while traveling on the Tejas Rajdhani Express on January 2, he met Chaudhary, who said some cars were being auctioned outside a court in Delhi, said Manoj Kumar Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North).

The officer further said that the suspect told the complainant that he could get a Toyota Innova Crysta for a price of Rs 5.30 lakh and advised him to come to the Tis Hazari court for purchasing the car.

On January 29, the complainant reached the court, where Chaudhary asked him to pay Rs 2.50 lakh and took his original Aadhar card and PAN card for the purchase of the car, the DCP said.

Chaudhary then fled and switched off his mobile phone, he said.

In a similar incident, on March 14, a man, who introduced Deepak Chaudhary as a crime officer, duped a person of Rs 1.50 lakh by promising him two Apple iPhones from an auction at Tis Hazari Court, the officer said.

Police said they checked CCTV footage and identified the man. A team was formed and the accused was arrested from east Vinod Nagar.

“During the investigation, the suspect, who gave his name as Deepak Chaudhary, was interrogated. Later, he revealed his original name as Ayub Khan,” the DCP said.

The fake identity card, fake trousers and shoes of Delhi Police were seized from his house, he said.

During interrogation, Khan said that he was unemployed and often involved in such scams by posing as an inspector of the Crime Branch of Delhi Police.

“He enjoys a lavish lifestyle and is constantly visiting bars and restaurants in Delhi and Mumbai. He has no steady source of income and that is why he started cheating people by posing as a police officer,” the DCP added.
