The billionaire owner of the new A-League team has vowed to replicate his American ice hockey success in Las Vegas with Auckland FC, which was unveiled as the name of the expansion club along with a bold playing strip.
Bill Foley helped turn the Vegas Golden Knights into Stanley Cup champions in the National Hockey League five years after their first game and has backed their ability to bring success to Auckland amid continued speculation about the financial viability of the competition.
There were mass layoffs in the A-League earlier this year, with its media arm taking the biggest hit, but officials were inclined to press ahead with not only the Auckland expansion but also a potential team in Canberra.
At the launch of the club’s name and colours, in the electric blue and black home kit, Foley said he wanted to put Auckland on the “world stage”.
“What I love about football is that it has an incredible power to inspire anyone, regardless of their age or background,” he said.

The team launched its new uniform and crest on Thursday, with Steve Corica (pictured right) as the team’s first coach.
“We have a track record of building successful professional sports teams and, just as we did in Las Vegas, I saw a unique opportunity to bring a new A-League football club with big ambitions to Auckland and take it to the world stage.”
The club aims to represent Auckland by using blue, the city’s traditional colour, as the main tone on the team crest.
The design also features an ‘A’ for Auckland, which also nods to the city’s skyline and volcanic Rangitoto Island.

The new club will be managed by A-League title winner Steve Corica, who has promised that his team, which is still short of players, will play entertaining football.
“I look forward to helping build the club from the ground up, fostering a strong attacking team known for its entertaining brand of football and attracting some of the best talent to grow with the club,” he said.
The new club’s crest features the letter ‘A’, which is a nod to the city and the skyline.
“We will have some interesting player announcements starting in June 2024.”
The name Auckland FC was chosen from a shortlist that included Auckland Volcanoes and Black Knights FC, and the club will play home games at Mount Smart Stadium, also used by the Warriors in the NRL.
