  • Polarizing Australian star on track to return from injury
  • He has been out of the sport for almost two years.
  • He also seems to have a shopping list of conspiracy theories.

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has always moved to the beat of his own drum, and it seems like he has some pretty outlandish beliefs when it comes to very well-established facts about planet Earth.

After two years away from the ATP Tour due to injuries, Kyrgios is scheduled to finally return to professional tennis in December ahead of another assault on the Australian Open.

The 29-year-old has taken a rollercoaster ride throughout his career, with achievements including reaching the Wimbledon final and winning the Australian Open doubles title.

However, he has also had his share of down times, including becoming the most fined player in tennis history due to his combustible nature and tendency to collapse when things don’t go his way.

Ahead of his dramatic return to the Australian Open, Kyrgios sat down to talk to the popular British documentary filmmaker. The Louis Theroux Podcast about everything from his mental health to his high-profile battle with the bottle.

Kyrgios often has an alternative view to the mainstream on most things, so Theroux decided to put the Australian star to the test and find out where he stands on some popular conspiracy theories, starting with the shape of the planet.

A growing number of conspiracy theorists think the Earth is flat because they doubt scientific findings.

They argue that it looks flat based on everyday experiences and question photographs and evidence of a round Earth, often because they don’t trust governments or scientists.

Science has a lot of evidence against these ideas, bBut Kyrgios is not convinced.

‘I’d probably be inclined to say it’s round, but I’m not surprised it’s the other way around either. Maybe we need to have a beer and have this off-record,’ he joked.

Theroux then asked the polarizing tennis star if she believed the ancient Egyptians were capable of building the pyramids.

‘No, I don’t believe it (I believe it). Impossible,” Kyrgios said.

‘That’s crazy. The fact that, how is it possible? They (the Egyptians) got all the measurements right and they all line up.

And “they did it by rolling large stones over logs” is an insane statement. Why are the doors so big?

‘Who needs to go through the doors if they are so big? I don’t know who it was.

‘I just don’t think we were capable. It’s 2024 and we can’t even all get along. And do you think we built the pyramids? You’re crazy. That’s crazy.

Historical artifacts have shown that the Egyptians ensured the precise construction of the pyramid using tools such as elbow rods for standard measurements and leveling instruments such as plumb lines (a precursor to the spirit level) and sighting tools for alignment.

The large doors allowed the movement of materials, but also symbolized the power of the pharaoh, creating a grand and visually impressive entrance to his tombs.

It didn’t stop there.

Another popular conspiracy theory is that the moon landing never happened and was instead filmed on a Hollywood sound stage.

It seems Kyrgios might believe in that too.

“I have my thoughts on it,” he said.
