Ruben Amorim could receive a significant pay rise if he agrees to become Manchester United’s next manager, according to a report.
The Red Devils are in talks with the Sporting CP coach to replace Erik ten Hag, who was relieved of his role on Monday morning after a dismal start to the campaign.
Mail Sport revealed last week that Amorim would be one of four targets if Ten Hag were sacked. His assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy has been put in charge temporarily, but United quickly began talks with Amorim and Sporting to activate the £8.5m release clause in his contract in Portugal.
According to talkSPORTThe 39-year-old could more than triple his current salary if he moves to Old Trafford.
Amorim earns around £2.1m a year as Sporting boss, while his demands for a contract worth £7m a year when negotiating with West Ham last summer indicate he will earn much more in Manchester.

The Dutchman was relieved of his duties after falling to 14th in the Premier League following the defeat to West Ham.
Amorim was interviewed about managerial vacancies at Liverpool and West Ham earlier this year and is said to be open to a move to Old Trafford.
Amorim is understood to have planned to leave Sporting at the end of the season, but learned of United’s interest earlier this month and has had two rounds of talks.
Asked about links to United following Ten Hag’s sacking, he said on Monday: “I was expecting this question and obviously I’m not going to talk about the future because otherwise I’ll always have to comment.” I’m very proud to be coach of Sporting, that’s all.
Amorim has led Sporting to two Portuguese league titles in his four years at the club.
As for the outgoing Ten Hag, Mail Sport revealed that sacking the Dutchman is costing United around £15million. They activated a one-year contract extension in the summer after deciding not to hire a replacement.
Ten Hag won the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup earlier this year, two trophies he made a point of reminding people when he faced criticism.
The 39-year-old has led Sporting to two top division titles in four seasons with the Portuguese giants.
Ten Hag assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy has been placed in temporary charge and will lead the club in the Carabao Cup clash on Wednesday.
In his first season he led United to third place in the Premier League, a marked improvement on the disastrous previous campaign in which they fell to sixth place under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.
However, they were unable to build on that success. United finished last in their Champions League group before recording their worst Premier League finish: eighth.
