Oscar Piastri was left slightly embarrassed after he was not allowed to enter McLaren’s luxurious headquarters on his first day with his new team.

Piastri was the new kid in town at the start of the 2023 season when the Australian replaced compatriot Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren.

There was much excitement surrounding the 23-year-old’s arrival and he duly delivered, securing a win in the Qatar Sprint as well as a pair of podium finishes.

But he didn’t get off to the best start at the car’s launch at McLaren’s headquarters in Woking last year, with the youngster unable to enter the building.

The incident was captured on the Netflix series Drive To Survive and Piastri was told to enter the building through a side door.

Even more awkward was the fact that he arrived late to his new workplace, and his senior teammate, Lando Norris, arrived on time.

‘Oscar Piastri. Another Australian,’ Norris said when speaking of the arrival of his new teammate.

“He probably has one of the best CVs of any young driver who has come into Formula One.

‘I’m going to be the veteran. I am the old one, he is the young one. “It’s the first time in my career I’ve had that kind of pressure.”

Norris was hilariously sizing up Piastri during their first meeting, joking with a McLaren official that the Australian looked “15” and sharing his surprise at the youngster’s height.

Piastri couldn’t hide his joy at making it to F1 when he sat down with the Netflix team for the first time.

“Being an F1 driver is a very exciting prospect,” he said.

“I’m definitely pinching myself because it’s something I couldn’t have dreamed of even a couple of years ago.”
