Christophe Dugarry has attacked Eden Hazard following the retired winger’s revealing interview about his struggles at Real Madrid.
Hazard secured a £150million move to Real Madrid in 2019 after enjoying an impressive campaign at Chelsea in which he scored 21 goals and led the Blues to Europa League glory.
But his career in Spain proved to be a huge disappointment as he scored just seven goals in 76 appearances across four seasons before hanging up his boots last year. Hazard arrived at his first pre-season at Madrid massively overweight and admitted that he “let go” that summer once the deal was done.
After reading Hazard’s revealing comments, Dugarry, who won the 1998 World Cup with France, feels the Belgian star failed his coach and teammates by not being honest about his commitment to the cause at the time.
speaking to RMC sportDugarry said: “It’s very easy to say this now, but it should have been said before.” It’s when you sign your multi-million dollar contract that you have to tell the president that you’re going out that night.

‘Did you tell your coach and your teammates that you were getting drunk and that you didn’t like running in training? Soccer is a professional and team sport. You have obligations.
‘You can’t respect everything to the letter but promoting this nonsense is a shame. Hazard was a great player, but it’s a shame for the fans who paid to see him play when he was drunk the day before.
‘His interview is a mockery of the world of football. If you want to act like a brave boy, you have to say it first. Why didn’t you tell Zidane this before signing for Real Madrid?
Dugarry’s fierce criticism of Hazard came after the 33-year-old spoke out about exactly what went wrong when he first arrived at Madrid.
“With Chelsea I had just finished one of the best seasons of my career,” he told L’Equipe.
“I said to myself: “now that I’m at Real Madrid, this may be the last vacation I’ll be able to take…”.
And I let myself go like I let myself go every summer. Seven years in England, without a break at Christmas, giving everything, so that when I have three or four weeks of vacation, “don’t bother me”, barbecues, rosé wine… all that.
‘And that’s what allowed me to reset myself to start again. Then, Real, it went wrong and that’s it.
Hazard also addressed the accusation that he was lazy when it came to training, admitting that at times he “didn’t feel like” getting involved.
Hazard admitted that sometimes he “didn’t feel like” training during his four years at Madrid
‘They say he was lazy. But I haven’t been training for 16 years (as a professional). The little games, the little races, I was there,’ he added.
‘It is true that some mornings I arrived without sleeping well, without desire, without desire, and when that is the case I show it.
‘Don’t give me the ball. I’m doing a square meter and I’m not moving! I do not move.
And I don’t move for an hour. An hour of tactics? “Can I go to the physio?”
