Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2 were the highest-grossing films of Independence Day.
The fourth installment of the animated franchise took the top spot yesterday with $20.4 million, while the widely praised sequel Inside Out came in second with $7.2 million on July 4, according to Deadline.
So far, Despicable Me 4 has grossed $47 million since its release on July 3.
It is also one of the best-performing films in the franchise at the Fourth of July box office, with Minions: Rise of Gru grossing $16 million on the holiday and Despicable Me 3 grossing $12.7 million on Independence Day 2017.
However, Despicable Me 4’s holiday box office numbers don’t match those of Despicable Me 2 in 2013; that film grossed $24.5 million at the July 4 box office.

The Inside Out sequel came in second with $7.2 million on July 4.
On Thursday, Inside Out 2 grossed $7.2 million, catapulting it over the $500 million mark. It has now grossed $503.6 million.
Kelsey Mann directed Inside Out 2, which picks up where Riley (Kensington Tallman) turns 13 and experiences new emotions like anxiety (Maya Hawke) and envy (Ayo Edebiri) at Joy’s (Amy Poehler) party. It has received rave reviews from critics.
Meanwhile, A Quiet Place grossed $4.7 million on July 4.
Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot grossed $3.1 million yesterday, while the first part of Kevin Costner’s western, Horizon, grossed $1.87 million.
Costner’s film opened last week and has so far grossed $14.8 million.
The horror film opened on June 27 and has now officially grossed $73.3 million at the box office, a 9% increase over what its predecessor, A Quiet Place, grossed during its first week in 2018, according to Deadline.
The original Despicable Me film was released in 2010, and its two sequels debuted in 2013 and 2017, respectively.
A duo of prequel films, titled Minions and Minions: The Rise Of Gru, were released in 2015 and 2022, respectively.
Steve Carrell has once again lent his voice to the lead role of Dru, while his on-screen wife, Lucy Wilde, is played by Kristen Wiig.
Inside Out 2 has become a critical and commercial success since its release on June 14.
