The Iowa Corn 350 is scheduled for Sunday, June 16 at 7 pm ET.
Before Sunday’s race there will be training and qualifying sessions. The 36 drivers will have an hour of practice on Friday.
The field will then compete in two-round qualifying on Saturday. Is that how it works:
The 36 drivers will be divided into two groups (found here).
Each driver will do two laps in the first round, and the five fastest cars in single lap speed from each group will advance.
In the final round, the remaining drivers each get two laps to establish the top 10 starting order, with positions 11 to 36 established based on the first round times.

Well, there’s no racial background here. This is the inaugural Iowa Corn 350 and the first Cup event ever held at this track. However, there are plenty of past Iowa winners in the field.

NASCAR in Iowa chooses favorites, drivers to follow
This is a total shot in the dark given the lack of history in Iowa.
But there are three questions you can answer to choose this weekend, in this order of importance:
1. Who has been fast on short tracks this season?
Iowa will be the sixth race this season to be held on a track of one mile or less. In those first five events, Hamlin has three wins (Bristol, Richmond, Dover), Bell has one win (Phoenix) and Byron has one win (Martinsville).
All of the Toyota drivers from Joe Gibbs Racing (Hamlin, Bell, Truex, Gibbs) and 23XI Racing (Reddick, Wallace) have been especially fast on this type of track, but the Hendrick Motorsports Chevys (Byron, Larson, Elliott) have been particularly fast. They awarded the top. three locations in Martinsville.
2. Who has tested at Iowa Speedway?
NASCAR held a tire test in Iowa last month with a representative from each manufacturer: Bell for Toyota, Larson for Chevy and Keselowski for Ford.
While it may not seem like much, spending a full day of laps on a new track could be an invaluable experience. The drivers will only have an hour to practice on Friday, but these three will arrive with a better idea of what to expect.
3. Who won at Iowa Speedway in the lower series?
What’s less important is that you can look at the previous winners mentioned above to determine who might perform well on Sunday. However, it does not deserve as much consideration as the previous two questions. In the lower series, drivers with larger teams have a big advantage. So, don’t make a big deal out of this one, but don’t ignore it completely either.
