A police investigation is underway after a 78-year-old woman was found dead at a home in Canberra's south.

The death of a 78-year-old woman is being treated as a domestic violence homicide and her elderly husband is under police guard in the hospital and no other suspects are being sought.

Officers were called to a home in Gordon, south of Canberra, for a welfare check after reports of a disturbance about 7.30am on Sunday.

They found the woman’s body inside her home on Togo Place.

Acting Detective Superintendent Stephen Ladd said police arrested the woman’s 86-year-old husband at a house about 10 kilometers northeast in Fadden.

The man remains in hospital under police guard and is being treated for a possible cardiac episode.

No charges have been filed.

“We are treating this as suspicious and as a homicide investigation,” Superintendent Ladd told reporters.

Police declined to detail the crime scene or the woman’s injuries, saying an autopsy would determine the cause of death.

Superintendent Ladd said he did not believe there were any other people involved and the pair were not previously known to police.

“Right now the husband is obviously assisting us with our investigations and because of that family relationship, we are treating this as a family violence incident,” she said.

‘Incidents like this are tragic and my deepest sympathies go out to my friends and family.

“If you think there are physical or mental health issues, especially as people get older, reach out and talk to someone and get the assistance you need to avoid situations like this.”
