The Kansas City Chiefs are monitoring Travis Kelce’s off-field commitments and could cancel them if the tight end’s performance begins to suffer, Mail Sport understands.
Kelce has helped Kansas City to successive Super Bowl victories and recently signed a two-year extension to become the highest-paid tight end in the NFL.
The 34-year-old is also making strides on TV: Kelce was recently named host of ‘Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?’ and then, on Tuesday, it emerged that he had also landed his first acting role.
Kelce has joined the all-star cast of Grotesquerie, such as Deadline reported for the first time. The Chiefs are understood to be happy with Kelce’s work outside of football and are willing to give him a “long leash”, especially given the circus surrounding his relationship with Taylor Swift.
Kansas City Chiefs believed to be monitoring Travis Kelce’s off-field commitments
Kelce reposted a video with actress Niecy Nash-Betts as she ‘enters’ the world of acting.
The Chiefs star landed his first on-screen acting role in Ryan Murphy’s show ‘Grotesquerie’.
But a source told Mail Sport: “If this affects their play on the pitch they will make sure to shut it down immediately.”
The source said: “The Chiefs organization is still riding high from their Super Bowl victory and they are very happy with Travis, which is why they recently gave him a new contract, but they are monitoring his outside commitments.”
“It’s fine to do commercials and TV shows and all that, but if it affects your play on the field, they’ll make sure to shut you down immediately.”
“They’re giving him a long leash, especially last season with all the coverage that came from Taylor being at games.
“But if his play on the field suffers and it’s because he’s trying too hard, you won’t see Travis doing any other TV shows.”
“If this affects their play on the field, they will make sure to shut it down immediately.”
Murphy has helped stars from other fields, such as singer Lady Gaga, make the transition to acting.
In fact, Mail Sport have been told, members of the organisation’s front office will have no problem “reprimanding” Kelce if his attention strays.
“The coaches and the organization don’t anticipate that happening, but they will criticize him if his play worsens next season and will 100 percent blame his outside commitments.
“The team wants another Super Bowl with the help Travis brings, and if he focuses too much on being a game show host, there will be a lot of disappointed people in the front office who will have no problem reprimanding him.”
The 34-year-old made his acting debut when he hosted Saturday Night Live in March 2023. He also made a cameo on the October sketch comedy show alongside his A-list girlfriend, Swift.
That wasn’t her first time on the small screen, however, as she starred in the reality series Catching Kelce in 2016.
The Chiefs star has begun filming Ryan Murphy’s new project, Grotesquerie, for FX
In February, he revealed that he has a passion for comedy during a pre-Super Bowl press conference.
“Man, I’m comedy through and through,” Kelce said at the time. ‘I don’t know if I’m anything else. I just like to have a fun time and make people laugh.
But I’ll take care of everything. Just to see if I have fun doing it. And I know there’s definitely Hollywood conversations going on, but I’ve been focused on football all season, so I’ll probably have a lot of those meetings and conversations when it’s all said and done.”
Murphy has a history of helping stars from other fields transition into acting, including Lady Gaga, whose first acting role was in American Horror Story.
