Where 49ers star Purdy ranks among the NFL’s top 10 quarterbacks entering the season Originally appeared in NBC Bay Area Sports

The best quarterbacks give their teams a great chance of winning the Super Bowl.

So, spoiler alert, Patrick Mahomes is the best of the best. He always gets the No. 1 spot. Kansas City Chiefs in the most important matches and, despite the brilliance of others, triumphs over its rivals.

But what about the rest of the harvest? Where are products like San Francisco 49ers Brock Purdy, Philadelphia Eagles Jalen Hurts and Buffalo Bills Is Josh Allen standing up?

As the 2024 season begins with a battle between two quarterbacks on this roster, let’s rank the top 10:

There’s no doubting Rodgers’ resume, but after barely playing last season and nursing an Achilles injury at age 40, there could even be an argument to be made for him to be outside the top 10 for now.

But the Jets The star takes the prize for his impressive longevity. He will just have to prove that he still has quality.

9. Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles

Hurts and the Eagles enjoyed a near-flawless start to the 2023 season. But when the close results stopped going their way, everything gradually fell apart.

Hurts’ all-around game is one of the best around, but the 26-year-old will have to continually prove he can play the ball when he’s down while also adding more variety to his runs beyond the infamous “butt-poke” touchdowns.

Stafford is aging like fine wine as he enters 2024 at age 36, after a solid individual campaign last year in which he helped Rams remain in the playoff mix despite their overall decline in quality across the roster.

The emergence of Puka Nacua certainly played a role as Cooper Kupp wasn’t as consistent, but a healthy Stafford still gives LA a platform to compete.

Love proved last season that his inexperience on the field could still be combined with experience learned off it.

With the Packers making Love, who turns 26 in early November, the highest-paid QB of all time this offseason, there will be higher expectations in his second full season.

If the end of last year for Love wasn’t a fluke, Green Bay fans might love what comes next.

It wasn’t long ago that Burrow was minutes away from winning the Super Bowl in the opponent’s stadium. Since then, however, it’s been more injury issues that have affected the 27-year-old Bengals star’s status.

Ja’Marr Chase’s absence could be an issue since Tyler Boyd is also no longer on the team, but Burrow is outside the top five as a big season looms.

Jackson won the NFL MVP award last season because… Crows He performed well in all the important games of the regular season. Then came the playoffs.

Jackson’s flaws came to light once again as he failed to prove he could be a high-volume passer when behind in a must-win scenario.

Can the 27-year-old finally overcome that hurdle this time around, or will he simply be known for being a great quarterback in the regular season?

4. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills

The Bills have been unlucky to have a talent as good as Allen in the Mahomes era. Along with Jackson, he is considered the best dual-threat quarterback in the league, with the ability to be a high-volume passer.

Allen’s biggest flaw is turnovers, which are the price of his aggressive style of play. Buffalo could have had more success with Allen if the 28-year-old had focused more on the big moments, so it will be interesting to see how he fares next time around.

3. Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers

In his first full season, Purdy completed 69.4 percent of his passes for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Now that he has completed his first full offseason, there will be more expectations for Purdy to go even further.

He’s proven he can get the 49ers into big games and put up numbers, but like Allen, Hurts and company, Mahomes has kept Purdy from getting the ultimate prize to further bolster his name. All eyes will be on his development with the return of Brandon Aiyuk.

Stroud had a magical rookie season to help Houston climb the standings in a tough AFC. He might have been on his way to more magic had he not been matched up against Mahomes early on, where the quality of the Texans’ depth simply couldn’t compete with Kansas City.

But with Houston getting stronger and retaining offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, Stroud could be in position to have a sensational second season.

1. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

There was some back-and-forth dialogue about whether Mahomes was clearly the best heading into 2023, but the Chiefs star eliminated all doubt with his third Super Bowl ring.

Even in an underperforming regular season in which Kansas City constantly looked vulnerable and Mahomes’ key receiver was tight end Travis Kelce, it still emerged victorious last season.

Honorable mentions

Justin Herbert, Los Angeles ChargersThe quarterback who came closest to cracking the top 10 was Herbert, though things have yet to fall into place for the former Oregon star. Now, having Jim Harbaugh could be key, but the quality of the weapons surrounding Herbert, 26, is currently not as compelling.

Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars: Like Herbert, Lawrence, who turns 25 in early October, has shown more flashes than consistent, significant greatness. With the addition of Brian Thomas Jr. and Gabe Davis, Lawrence could move up a few levels with his ability to make big shots, but he also needs to reduce the number of potential turnover-worthy moments.

Please, Prescott, Dallas Cowboys: Prescott, 31, put up strong numbers in the regular season as Dallas clinched the second seed in the NFC, but he also benefited from a relatively quiet schedule. The Cowboys then fell at home to Love and seventh-seeded Green Bay, further damaging Prescott’s postseason reputation. He’s far outside the top 10 for that primary reason.
