Urgent onion recall at trendy grocery chain for over 1,000 packets that ‘may be contaminated with salmonella’

An urgent recall has been issued for more than 1,000 packages of green onions at major retailers, including Trader Joe’s, after testing revealed the products “may be contaminated with salmonella.”

A total of 1,271 boxes of green onions were voluntarily recalled by Brothers of the Church LLC on October 18, following the discovery of a single product sample collected by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency that “indicated the presence of Salmonella.”

The recalled products were distributed to a small number of stores in Canada and the United States in eleven states: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia.

Products in stores, including the popular neighborhood grocery store Trader Joe’s, are being recalled for possible contamination.

Contaminated Trader Joe’s brand green onions can be identified by the 9/25/24 packaging date found on the back of the bag.

Church Brothers brand of Green Onions Iceless 4 x 2lb Reg Church Brothers Mexico in a clear bag, with lot code CB272378, was among the product listing.

Trader Joe’s Iceless Green Onion 24 x 6oz Reg Trader Joe’s Mexico in a branded retail bag, with code CB272328 and a packaging date of 09/25/24 found on the back of the bag.

In Canada and the US, Green Onion Iceless 4 x 2 lb Reg from Imperial Fresh with the same lot code in a clear bag, was also on the recall list.

He US Food and Drug Administration has advised anyone who has these products to throw them away and not consume them.

Green Onion Iceless 4 x2lb by Imperial Fresh Reg Church Brothers Mexico was on the recall list for Canada and the US.

Salmonella infections usually present in healthy people as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Currently no illnesses have been reported.

Among young children, frail or elderly people, or those with weakened immune systems, the Salmonella organism can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections.”

A recall of several brands of eggs was recently announced due to salmonella outbreaks in nine states.

The FDA recalled chicken eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms and Tony’s Fresh Market due to a salmonella outbreak in nine states.

Earlier this month, the FDA gave the recall a ‘Class I’ label, meaning there is a ‘reasonable likelihood’ that exposure to eggs ‘will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.’

Distributed by Wisconsin-based Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC, contaminated eggs have sickened 65 people and hospitalized 24.
