A road trip to Cape York in Australia turned into tragedy for an elderly couple after they crashed their 4×4 vehicle on a remote dirt road.
The silver Toyota LandCruiser was travelling on Peninsula Development Road, about 30 kilometres north of Archer River Roadhouse, when it left the road and struck a tree at about 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
Emergency crews, including a rescue helicopter, were called to the area, about five hours north of Cairns, where the 68-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene and a 65-year-old female passenger was airlifted to Cairns hospital.
There were no other passengers in the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved.
The couple are understood to have travelled from New South Wales.
The Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit is investigating how the crash happened.

The crash follows two others in far north Queensland on Friday.
A car has reportedly crashed into a barricade in Mowbray, 58 kilometres north of Cairns.
“Two patients are being treated but it appears the driver suffered a medical episode,” a Queensland Ambulance spokesman said. The courier mail.
A two-vehicle crash in Port Douglas also resulted in an elderly man being taken to Cairns Hospital in a serious condition.
“A man in his 70s was transported in a serious condition after suffering a medical episode prior to the crash,” the spokesman said.
The car crashed into a tree about 30 miles north of Archer River Roadhouse, a popular tourist spot.
