The golf season may be drawing to a close, but a host of stars had their five irons ready as Pro-Am competition got underway at the BMW PGA Championship in Surrey on Wednesday.

Hollywood star Tom Holland was joined by Strictly Come Dancing judge Anton DuBeke and his wife Hannah at the private Wentworth Golf Club in Virginia Waters, where the celebrities prepared to compete against seasoned professional golfers.

The event, a traditional prelude to the annual BMW PGA Championship, sees participating stars join selected professionals in groups of three for a competition on the West Course.

On Wednesday, Holland and his twin brothers Harry and Sam were joined by professional golfer Tommy Fleetwood.

But there was no sign of Zendaya, Holland’s actress girlfriend, as he played golf while Fleetwood looked on.

Meanwhile, DuBeke, who returned to the BBC with Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday night, was joined by former tennis star Andy Murray, cricketer James Anderson and professional golfer Robert MacIntyre.

The ballroom dance specialist kept spectators entertained by showing off some of his moves after entering the field.

Murray made a long-awaited return to competitive sport following his emotional retirement over the summer, as he swapped the tennis court for the golf course to compete in the event.

The Scottish icon said goodbye to the sport he lit up for two decades after falling in the doubles event at the Paris Olympics to partner Dan Evans.

In a glittering career, Murray won two Wimbledon titles and was a two-time Olympic champion as he battled Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in a series of classic “Big Four” rivalries.

Other celebrity participants include TV personality Sam Thompson, former boxer Tony Bellew, comedian Michael McIntyre and retired footballers Gareth Bale and Troy Deeney.

The one-day event will be followed by the BMW PGA Championship, which runs through Sunday, September 22.

The crowd had been lining the fairways of the famous course since 6.30am and most seemed to be there for one man.

As he made his way to the 18th hole to begin his round, as the tournament has a simultaneous start and each group starts on a different hole, the crowd of supporters erupted in applause for the tennis great.

But there were many raised eyebrows in the crowd because Sir Andy appeared to forget to observe one of the sport’s key rules, The Telegraph reports.

Pulling his driver out of his bag and hitting the ball down the monstrous par five, the Olympian had his green polo shirt untucked, no doubt drawing the ire of club members.

Murray walked down the immaculate fairway with partner Robert MacIntyre, who tied for eighth at this year’s Open and whose strong performances helped Europe win the Ryder Cup last year.

The golfer told Sky Sports: ‘Andy is a hero to so many people in Scotland – and around the world – and it’s really exciting to play alongside him on his debut at the BMW PGA Championship.

“He’s been completely dedicated to tennis throughout his incredible career, but it seems he’s been playing a lot of golf since he retired, so I’m looking forward to seeing if all that practice has paid off.”

He was joined by TV host Dan Walker, with whom he shared a hilarious reaction on the second hole.
