Ebon Moss-Bachrach has revealed how the cast of The Bear began filming season four during production of season three.
During an interview on the podcast Talk calmly with Sam FragosoMoss-Bachrach, 47, revealed how parts of season four ended up being filmed after they realized how long the episodes of season three had become.
However, because the story was filmed in a non-linear manner, it caused stress for him and his co-stars Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri.
“When we started season three, we weren’t planning on doing either one,” he explained. “But it just kept getting bigger and some of our episodes got quite long, over an hour.”
‘Some of these episodes were being split up… I thought, ‘You know what? We’re going to turn this into two seasons and now we’re going to do 15 or 16 episodes instead of 10. But we’re going to do it all at the same time.’
Ebon Moss-Bachrach has revealed how some of the 18 episodes filmed during production of The Bear season 3 will be used in the upcoming fourth season.
But the stars ended up in a “constant state” of assessing where their characters were currently at as the seasons were filmed non-sequentially.
“I’d come in at the beginning of the day and shoot a scene from the Season 4 finale, then shoot a scene from the beginning of Season 3, then shoot a scene from the Season 3 finale,” Moss-Bachrach added. “It required a tremendous amount of war space, like Post-It notes.”
“Me, Ayo and Jeremy are all in a constant state of rereading through the seasons and trying to remember where your person is on this kind of emotional roller coaster of opening a roller coaster,” she detailed.
Although Moss-Bachrach found his efforts “exciting,” it was also disconcerting to him: “It made for a very exciting and confusing shoot,” he said.
In another recent interview with Mr. Porter, Moss-Bachrach revealed that the cast filmed “about 18 episodes.”
“We shot about 18 episodes, but everything changes,” he recalls. “In the past, what was one episode on the page was split into two. I just get lost in the mess and the chaos.”
‘I like being taken by a wave that’s bigger than I thought it would be, spinning me around, and coming out the other end.
“It’s very chaotic. I love big scenes. Scenes with lots of moving parts. People talking at the same time.”

Moss-Bachrach has become a household name thanks to her starring role in The Bear.
The Bear has won industry awards and critical acclaim, but still seems to remain outside the mainstream.
Moss-Bachrach, who stars alongside talented but troubled chef Carmen Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) as irritable restaurant manager Richie Jerimovich, has inevitably become a household name as a result of the show’s growing popularity.
And as he enters his third season, Moss-Bachrach admits that even he has been affected by Richie’s transformation from unstable, Xanax-popping adversary to Berzatto’s trusted ally and friend.
Speaking to MR. PORTER, she said: “He had this redemption and he seemed irredeemable. I think that’s why people are responding. I feel like I’ve had a front row seat to watching this man (get) a second chance.”
The actor opened up about his role as irritable restaurant manager Richie Jerimovich while posing for a new photo shoot with MR. PORTER.
The show’s popularity was reflected during awards season, when The Bear won ten Emmys, including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for its co-stars White, Moss-Bachrach and Ayo Edebiri.
Reflecting on his return to set after such an unprecedented win, Moss-Bachrach admitted that he felt pressured to deliver bigger performances as they filmed each new episode one after the other.
“When I got to the set afterwards, I was nervous,” he explained. “I felt like there was an expectation, an external pressure to live up to. I’m sure everyone felt that.”
The actor also admitted that his off-screen relationship with leading man White is a far cry from their turbulent on-screen dynamic.
“Humble is not the right word,” he said of his co-star. “He has an inability to stand apart from himself or to rise above others. He’s just a guy among people.”

Moss-Bachrach admits that even he has been affected by Richie’s transformation from unstable, Xanax-taking adversary to trusted ally and friend of Berzatto.
The actor reflected on his role after swapping his plainclothes kitchen attire for couture pieces from The Row, Auralee, SAINT LAURENT and Bottega Veneta while working with photographer Clément Pascal on a new shoot.
The FX-produced show racked up more than 5.4 million views worldwide in its first four days of broadcast, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It received strong reviews on social media following the release of the third season and had its best numbers since its debut in 2022, when it began streaming on Hulu.
The cast also includes Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott, Edwin Lee Gibson, Matty Matheson, Corey Hendrix and Oliver Platt.
The 5.4 million total represents full viewing of the 36-minute debut episode, which is titled Tomorrow, the outlet reported.
The show, produced by FX, racked up more than 5.4 million views worldwide in its first four days of broadcast.

This marks a 24 percent increase since the show’s second season debuted in June 2023, which had around 4.35 million views.
The total represents a record for the show in a four-day span, as well as Hulu’s largest total for an FX season debut or a scripted series, according to THR.
Hulu said the show’s ratings were the third-highest ever for an original season premiere.
Outside the US, the series can be watched on the Disney+ streaming service.
The Bear has gained momentum in recent years, as its second season was in the Nielsen Top 10 for a five-week period in June 2023.
