A search is underway for a man who attacked a young mother during an alleged carjacking in an Adelaide car park while her daughter was sitting in the back seat (pictured).

A young mother was pepper sprayed in the face and attacked during an attempted carjacking while her young son was sitting in the back seat.

The unsuspecting woman was sitting in her Range Rover in a car park near Playford Plaza in Munno Para, in Adelaide’s north, about 3.30pm on Monday when a man approached the car.

He had just dropped his oldest son off at tutoring across the street.

Dressed in a gray t-shirt, black shorts, sunglasses and a hat, the man was armed with pepper spray and a screwdriver.

CCTV showed the man approaching the driver’s side window before spraying the woman and attempting to attack her with the screwdriver.

He then opened the door and tried to get the woman out of the car.

Their plan was thwarted after a good Samaritan heard the mother’s screams and ran to her aid.

He chased away the attempted vehicle thief, who fled the scene.

The woman’s eyes were burned by the pepper spray and she was left shaken by the ordeal.

The Good Samaritan was also overcome by the fumes from the pepper spray while trying to help the woman.

The toddler tied in the back seat was unharmed.

Nearby shoppers also heard the mother’s screams and said nine news They had previously seen the man in the area.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

No arrests have been made yet.

Anyone with information has been urged to come forward.
