Commuters at one of Sydney’s new metro stations have complained of an unbearable stench, describing the unpleasant smell as a mix of sewage and vegetables.

A commuter noticed an offensive stench at Victoria Cross station in North Sydney on Thursday and Sydneysiders asked in a Facebook post: “Why does Victoria Cross Station smell like cabbage?”

Many Sydney commuters were quick to agree with the woman, writing that they had also noticed the questionable smell at the new station.

“I passed by there this afternoon and noticed the same thing,” wrote one.

“I was so glad I saw this. I was there an hour ago and I started getting really worried because it was me,” a second person added.

“I thought someone was cooking broccoli,” said a third.

“It smells like sushi,” said another.

“Today there was a bad smell. I thought it was a sewage smell,” added a fifth.

Another shared a simple theory about the origin of the horrible smell.

“This is wet concrete. It smells like a newly built subway.”

One contributor added: ‘It’s like 100 feet underground and there are toilets down there, so I guess that’s the problem.’

Sydney’s new driverless metro system, which runs beneath the city and cost a whopping $21 billion, took seven years to build.

The second stage of the rail network between Chatswood and Sydenham includes four new tube stations, including Victoria Cross, and its opening has been delayed by two weeks until 19 August.

Multiple factors contributed to the delay in opening the new line, including industrial strikes and problems on the existing northwestern section of the line, which left passengers stranded for hours.

Passengers were at a loss to know what the smell might have been, with one suggesting that “Carnis lived there” (pictured is the new Victoria Cross station).

It is part of a broader rollout of metro services across the city that combine to form the largest public transport project in the country.

The final bill for the Sydney Metro City and Southwest line is expected to cost around $9 billion more than its initial price tag.
