A heavily intoxicated single mother swore at police and tried to prevent police from carrying out a breathalyzer test on her after trying to flee the scene of a horror crash, a court has heard.

Storm Kimberly Dewhirst Oates, 33, pleaded guilty to drink driving, obstructing police and causing a public nuisance at Gladstone Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The court heard the former aged care worker crashed her Nissan Navarra into a brick wall on Toolooa Street in Gladstone, central Queensland, at about 12.25am on June 14.

Police patrolling the area witnessed the accident and stopped behind the wrecked vehicle. Courier mail reported.

Officers are believed to have arrived just in time to see Dewhirst Oates exit the driver’s seat before he allegedly fled the scene.

Police arrested the mother of six a short time later and attempted to administer a breathalyzer test before Dewhirst Oates “smashed” the breathalyzer, the court heard.

Police prosecutor Jennifer Leach said an “intoxicated” Dewhirst Oates shouted at officers before swearing.

“Shit, of course I’m drunk, you moron,” she told police.

It is believed that at that time there were stunned local people passing by the place.

Despite being repeatedly warned not to continue his tirade, Dewhirst Oates continued to yell and swear at police.

Police eventually conducted a breathalyzer test, where Dewhirst Oates returned a result of 0.140, almost three times the legal limit.

Her lawyer, Bianca Wieland, told the court that her client is a single mother and is solely responsible for the care of her children.

She also told the court that Dewhirst Oates also used to look after her mother.

“There was a lot going on in his life at the time the crime occurred – his mother’s health and his life in general,” Wieland said.

He said his client admitted to drinking “too much” and understands the consequences of his actions.
