Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson was limited in practice Thursday because of a calf strain, three days before Pittsburgh’s Sept. 8 season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.
Head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters that the stiffness was in the same right calf that Wilson was injured at the start of training camp In July, he said Wilson would likely undergo further evaluations “out of an abundance of caution.”
Asked if backup Justin Fields would be ready to play against the Falcons if Wilson is unable to play, Tomlin expressed confidence.
“I would feel very comfortable if that was the case, certainly,” Tomlin said.
Wilson did not speak to reporters. He was initially scheduled to be available to the media on Thursday. That was delayed until Friday..
