A 16-year-old girl was tortured and killed after complaining about the quality of marijuana sold by Brazilian drug traffickers.
Gabriela Pereira reportedly angered drug dealers by criticizing their marijuana during a live broadcast on Monday in the city of Cáceres.
The teenager apparently made hand gestures on the live stream associated with a rival drug gang, further angering the traffickers, according to the Mato Grosso Civil Police.
Two drug dealers, aged 20 and 24, kidnapped Pereira from her home and took her to another house in the Jardim Primavera neighbourhood.
Brazilian teenager Gabriela Pereira was tortured for five hours and then killed by drug dealers after she allegedly criticised the quality of the marijuana they were selling.
Mato Grosso Civil Police said the teenager may have had ties to rivals of the drug traffickers who killed her.
The teenager was reportedly tied up and beaten for five hours before she was finally killed.
Pereira’s body was abandoned on a street in the Nova Era neighborhood.
Police located the residence where the victim was tortured and recovered her burned clothes and other belongings in the backyard. They also found blood stains on the floor of the house.
One of the suspects was arrested at the home and confessed to murdering Pereira.
He provided authorities with the whereabouts of his accomplice, who was arrested in the Vitória Régia neighborhood.
Authorities said Pereira made hand gestures that referred to rivals of the drug dealers who killed her.
The second suspect also admitted to torturing and murdering the teenager.
Marlon Nogeira, head of the Mato Grosso Civil Police, who is leading the investigation, told media that Pereira may have had links to the traffickers’ rivals, noting that she had made hand signals referring to the other gang in previous photos.
“The victim made a live broadcast criticizing the use of marijuana by the faction that ordered his death,” Nogeira said. “They understood that this favored the rival group.”
The suspects, whose names have not been released, face charges of murder, torture and organized crime.
