He became a free agent after the 2023 World Series after MLB placed him on indefinite administrative leave following his arrest. Urias spent the first eight years of his career with the Dodgers.

The leave was imposed under baseball’s joint policy on domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse with the players’ association and could be the first step toward a suspension. Players are paid but cannot play while on leave.

Even without a criminal conviction, MLB could suspend the left-hander if it concludes he violated the policy.

Urias was also arrested in May 2019 on suspicion of domestic violence. MLB suspended him for 20 games, but the Los Angeles city attorney did not prosecute him on the condition that he complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling program. No player has ever been suspended twice under MLB’s domestic violence policy.
