The family of a worker who suffered serious head injuries after a horrific moped accident in Bali have made the heartbreaking decision to take him off life support, while revealing he has “given the gift of life” by donating his organs.
Shane Ramsey, 30, had been visiting the Indonesian island for a wedding and was riding a motorbike in Seminyak on Sunday when he crashed into a pole on the side of the road.
He was not wearing a helmet and did not have travel insurance, which would have cost him only about $50 a week.
Mr Ramsey was rushed to hospital, where he underwent brain surgery and has been in a coma ever since, racking up huge hospital bills.
His family paid $70,000 for him to undergo emergency neurosurgery and arranged for a medical evacuation flight, believed to have cost around $150,000.
Mr Ramsey landed in Perth shortly after 5pm on Thursday and was taken by ambulance to the intensive care unit at Royal Perth Hospital.
However, his mother Catherine Ramsey said she and her family were left “devastated” after deciding to turn off his life support in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
“He went dead at 3.18am when they took him into the theatre to give him the gift of life,” Ramsey told Daily Mail Australia.

His family turned off life support at 3.18am on Monday.
It is understood Shane will donate all of his organs to those in urgent need of a transplant.
Ms Ramsey previously told Daily Mail Australia that Mr Ramsey had suffered three bleeds on the brain (which required surgery) and a skull fracture.
He was on his way to watch a UFC fight with friends when the accident occurred.
Her mother previously told Nine News she would sell the family home to pay her medical bills if necessary.
“I just want to take him home, we’re in a strange country,” he said.
Doctors were unsure of the extent of the damage to his brain.
Mr. Ramsey had plans to buy property when he returned home.
The family of Perth carpenter Shane Ramsey (pictured) have revealed the horrific extent of his injuries after he crashed his moped while on holiday in Bali.
The young worker has been hospitalized since Sunday and his family says they do not know the full extent of his injuries.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched last Monday to help pay for Mr. Ramsey’s medical bills and his possible transfer home for medical evacuation.
At the time of this publication, nearly $130,000 has been raised.
Mr Ramsey had just completed a three-year apprenticeship and was excited about the future that lay ahead.
The carpenter’s former boss also took to Facebook on Monday to raise awareness about the fundraiser.
He remembered running into his former apprentice a few weeks ago.
“You forget how fucking fragile life can be (and) how quickly everything can change,” she wrote.
