Masters champion Scottie Scheffler will be without caddy Ted Scott for the third round of the 106th US PGA Championship as he bids to win back-to-back major titles.

Scheffler’s participation in Valhalla had been in doubt until his wife Meredith gave birth to their first child last week, while the world number one was not participating in the Wells Fargo Championships.

But Scheffler revealed in his pre-tournament press conference that, assuming he makes it halfway through the year’s second major, his caddy has already taken care of his family obligations at home.

Scott’s daughter graduates from high school this week and Scheffler said, “Teddy will go home Friday night and will return Saturday night after graduation.”

“That’s something we talked about from the beginning of our relationship: family always comes first, and it’s the same for me and my caddie. It was a pretty easy decision.

‘He told me earlier this year that was the date, so I got a backup caddy. One of my friends will carry the bag on Saturday and then Ted will be back for the Sunday round.

He is one of my older friends who travels here week after week. He is the chaplain of the PGA Tour. His name is Brad and he will be my caddy on Saturday. I trust him more than my friends to rake a bunker.

Scheffler hasn’t competed since winning the RBC Heritage title the week after earning a second green jacket at Augusta National, but believes he’s well prepared to challenge for the win at Valhalla.

“I was able to train and play a lot at home,” Scheffler said.

‘Obviously last week was a little different with the arrival of our son. But yeah, I would say three weeks is probably a little longer break than I would normally take.

Earlier this month, Scheffler and his wife Meredith confirmed the birth of their son: Bennett.

‘I’m definitely rested heading into this week. I don’t really feel like any rust has built up. I was able to practice and play a lot at home.

‘I can do things at home to simulate a golf tournament, especially on the greens, competing and betting with my friends. I also don’t want to lose to them, so I was able to simulate the competition a little at home.

‘I told my son when I was leaving, and I said, ‘I don’t want to leave you now, but I need to.

“I’m called to do my job to the best of my ability, and I felt like showing up on Wednesday night would do me no favors this week as far as playing and competing in the tournament.”
