A scorching heatwave could send the mercury soaring close to 40C in one state, while a cold blast will leave Australians shivering elsewhere.

In Western Australia, Perth will experience pleasant temperatures of between 20°C and 25°C for the next few days, but northern and inland parts of the state could feel the heat increase.

“We could see it getting very close to 40C, but it doesn’t seem likely,” said Weatherzone meteorologist Angus Konta.

Although temperatures in the Northern Territory are expected to be around 30°C, the rest of the country will experience tremors.

“In the Southeast it almost feels like winter is coming back, with some cold fronts moving through,” Konta said.

“We sometimes see this kind of thing this time of year, where we see almost summer-like conditions but winter-like conditions in other areas.”

Melbourne and Hobart have had cool days, but a cold front will arrive on Friday and Saturday.

“And that will make temperatures very similar to winter temperatures, around 15°C in Melbourne,” Konta said.

‘Temperatures in Hobart could drop below 10°C on Saturday.’

Although Adelaide is not as cold as Melbourne or Hobart, Saturday is likely to be chilly, with temperatures reaching around 15°C.

“But we could also see some pretty cold mornings. Thursday morning it was down to 5°C and we could see more mornings like that through early next week,” Konta said.

The southerly shift is moving up the east coast, ending the warm conditions Sydney experienced earlier in spring.

“On Thursday the temperature dropped to 20 degrees Celsius, but the wind chill is considerably colder due to the southerly winds,” Konta said.

The weather is expected to be milder in Sydney, however the cold front from Tasmania and Victoria will arrive on Sunday.

“It’s looking like it will be another cold day with some rain as Canberra is set to be affected on Saturday,” Konta said.

But Brisbane will be the wettest city, with a trough creating a wet Thursday and more showers expected on Sunday.

“It’s not necessarily cold, but it will be quite rainy, although the southerly wind will arrive from Friday and cool the temperatures,” Konta said.

‘Nevertheless, Brisbane still has a chance of staying dry as rainfall is falling on the coast.’
