Ruben Amorim may be on his way to Manchester United, but if Friday night’s performance is anything to go by, he is certainly leaving Sporting fans with some parting gifts.
His team demolished Estrela Amadora 5-1 in Lisbon, with Viktor Gyokeres dismantling the defense with four goals in an impressive performance to maintain the Portuguese champions’ perfect start.
Maximiliano Araujo scored the fifth goal for the hosts in the 85th minute, while Rodrigo Pinho scored in the first half for Estrela Amadora, but Sporting simply had too much to handle.
Gyokeres’ first goal came in the 19th minute, taking advantage of a weak deflection inside the area to the left, before cutting past Estrela Amadora goalkeeper Bruno.
His second, 12 minutes later, was a powerful right-footed shot that crashed into the roof of the net from near the edge of the area, having cleverly overcome the offside trap.
Viktor Gyokeres scored four goals in Ruben Amorim’s first game since being announced as Man United’s new manager.
Amorim was confirmed as Man United’s new manager on Friday after a week-long search.
And just before half-time, the Swedish striker, from Coventry City, completed his hat-trick in the 23rd minute with a confidently converted penalty.
As expected, taking into account the result, Amorim’s team offered a guaranteed show in front of the Sporting fans, who were saying goodbye to their coach.
With 20 shots and 65 percent of the ball, it was perhaps a display that could excite Manchester United fans.
In fact, Gyokeres was asked if he would join Amorim at Old Trafford in the near future, and he replied: ‘I don’t know. I’m here and, as you can see, I’m enjoying it.’
He added: “It’s sad that Amorim is leaving, he has done incredible here, we will do the same job and keep the same faith in the team.” “We all wish him the best.”
Amorim himself has faced questions all week over United’s interest since Erik ten Hag’s departure on Monday.
And that trend continued after the match, with the line of intrigue now turning to how he hopes Sporting fans will react to their final home game before their departure.
Amorim admitted that he is willing to accept any farewell he receives from Sporting’s home fans, whether it be anger or praise.
“In the next home game, whether we win or lose 15-0, I will be there to see what the fans want to give me,” he responded.
‘I understand your anger, but we move on and time heals everything. “It was the best period of my life.”
