Ben Askins from the UK shared the story of an anonymous office worker whose team was in the US during the week.

Because they were overseas, the man had to work American time to be able to support them – so he would stay hunched over his laptop late into the night.

He thought it was reasonable to ignore his company’s two-day mandate to go to the office because it would be empty during his work hours – but everything fell apart when he received a stern message from his manager.

“Apparently you haven’t been to the office this week?” the message read.

The office worker replied, “Yes, I’m the only one in the office this week because everyone is in the States for the event.”

“You know the policy, everyone has to go there at least twice a week,” retorts the manager.

But the employee didn’t see the logic in going to an empty office.

“I understand, but since I work American hours to support the team, it’s much easier to do it from home, especially since everything is on Teams anyway,” he said .

“The reason we have this office is to allow everyone to spend face-to-face time,” the official responded.

The employee tried to defend himself again, but the manager was unable to do so.

“I’m not here to argue, I just wanted to make it clear that if you do this again it will be a warning,” he chided.

‘It’s a joke, isn’t it? Because it looks like you’re giving me a warning not to go hang out in an empty office,” the employee responded.

His boss said, “Why would I joke?” Sarcasm is not necessary. I will send you a link so we can discuss it further.

In a final little jab, the employee replied, “Are you sure you don’t want me to come to the office for this?”

Mr Askins furiously criticized the boss’s management style.

“That’s my problem: When companies are this inflexible, they just start treating people like children. It makes perfect sense to work from home if you work in the United States and support your team from abroad. It’s a question of judgment.

“The company shouldn’t care if he’s in the office or not, as long as he’s doing his job. There’s absolutely no need to have it moving around to make remote calls all day,” he said.

But a few didn’t see the harm in asking employees to work from the office.

“If your boss wants you to go to the office, then leave. It’s not up to employees to decide where they want to work,” one of them said.

“You must alert your boss before deciding not to come to work. Remote working is not something you can decide to do. This must be sanctioned by your manager. That’s common sense to me,” added another.
