Pubs, clubs and bars will stay open until the early hours of the morning during the Olympics, in a major change to one state’s business hours.

Venues in New South Wales will be able to operate later than usual when broadcasting selected events from the 2024 Olympics, in a new move by the NSW government.

The decision will give more Olympic fans the chance to cheer on their favourite teams, given the eight-hour time difference between Paris and Sydney.

Music and Night-Time Economy Minister John Graham said all NSW pubs, clubs and bars are eligible for extended trading hours and do not need to apply individually to open when they broadcast the Olympics live.

“Olympic fever only strikes once every four years and as Australians we know that means late nights and a certain lack of sleep to enjoy it properly,” he said.

“There’s nothing like cheering on a gold medal winner with friends and the community. The expanded special trading event will help do just that, while also providing an economic boost and more evening jobs.”

The move will also extend beyond the Olympics, with venues allowed to keep their doors open longer for “special cultural and sporting events” in a bid to boost nightlife economies. Racing and Gaming Minister David Harris said he was keen to take advantage of the new trading hours.

“The Olympic Games are the greatest spectacle on earth and Australia is one of the most sport-loving nations, so it is fitting that residents of New South Wales can gather at local venues to cheer on our athletes competing in these important events,” he said.

‘The expanded trade will allow our pubs, clubs and bars to benefit from the Games while customers enjoy the Olympic atmosphere.

“I look forward to joining the nightly crowds cheering on our Olympians over the coming weeks.”

Customers are advised to check with their local establishments for specific opening hours.
