Police are negotiating with a man believed to be armed with a crossbow at an address in Victoria Street, Seddon, 7km west of Melbourne’s CBD.
There had previously been an alleged stabbing in the area.
Several heavily armed police officers were present at the scene, and a police helicopter was hovering overhead.
The street has been closed while talks are held with the suspect.
The man is believed to be the only person inside the property.
Police are encouraging people to avoid the area.
“I’ve never seen anything like this. There are police everywhere, half of Victoria Street is cordoned off,” one person wrote on X.
